A Letter from the mother of Chen Haobo, an American student who has been in China for only 3 years
My son has been growing up in a more liberal education environment, where he got used to being encouraged and complimented by teachers, where he would never review specifically for a test or exam. When we first returned to China, we were really worried about whether he would be able to adapt to China's education method. It has been proved that our worries were unnecessary.
I feel really fortunate to have chosen RDFZ. The teachers of RDFZ are very good at discovering the children's advantages and strengths. They encourage and praise the students for their progress in various ways and on different occasions including the parents meetings. My son’s class teacher, in particular, has created a lot of opportunities for my son to participate in different kinds of activities where he could play his strong points of using English, thus his self confidence was built up and his sense of belonging to his class was enhanced. When the Chinese language teacher noticed that my son did not concentrate his mind during lessons, she did not just criticize him but discussed with him about the reasons. She even asked my son whether it was because her teaching could not attract his attention and which areas she needed to improve. The maths teacher has emphasized on developing student’s interest and believes that it is the best way to help students to improve their grades. The teachers from the International Section have been using various methods to encourage my son for his progress. The students of RDFZ are active, lovely and friendly. My son could not speak much Chinese, but pretty soon he was able to make a lot of friends, which is really important for my son at such age.
With such good teachers and schoolmates, my son was able to adapt to a new environment very quickly and has been making fast progress and growing up quickly. He has been enjoying his learning and colourful life at RDFZ as he was before.
(Note: Chen Haobo was born in Minnesota, USA. He had been studying in America before he came to RDFZ. In September 2011, he came to Beijing with his mother and was admitted into RDFZ. When he first arrived, he could only speak very little Chinese. Currently he is in Grade 9 studying in the same class with other Chinese students. His Chinese level has now reached to intermediate level of a Chinese student.)
