On the afternoon of June 16th, Dr. Hu Xinli from the Institute of Molecular Medicine of Peking University came to RDFZ and gave all AP students a lecture on technological development and its current situation concerning transgenic animals. Dr. Hu highlighted the research of transgenic mice, sharing her own work experiences with the audience.
At the very beginning of the lecture, Dr. Hu was received with a warm applause by an enthusiastic audience. Following an overall introduction to research on the transgenic mice, the PKU researcher elaborated in the simplest terms on the advantages of using mouse models as well as the traits of genetically modified mice in different phases. Dr. Hu delivered a lively and interesting class by sharing with the participants her own work experiences, arousing great interest in biochemical research among the students. The class also featured marvelous procedures of breeding transgenic animals. Later when it came to the part that Dr. Hu showed them the pictures of laboratories of Peking University, students who aspire to major in biology all expressed their yearning for doing experiments in those labs.
At the end of the lecture, students raised questions related to transgenic animals and plants, such as how would mouse models react to treatments, whether grafting is a kind of transgenic process, among others. The lecture came to a successful end in the midst of a loud applause from the crowd, followed by group photos and further discussions between the enthusiastic audience and the PKU professor.
The scientific exploration, part of the lectures of Hot Biology, is an attraction of AP project, a Sino-foreign joint education of the Beijing-based renowned school. With the all-out support from school leaders and teachers, the project aims to broaden students’ views in sciences and engineering and enhance their creativity and competitiveness by inviting experts from companies and research institutes to deliver lectures as well as organizing field trips to relevant off-campus organs.
